Virginia Tech research is underway in its Digital Ag Technologies Lab to address one of the peanut industry’s biggest challenges: Sclerotinia blight, a fungal disease that can cause significant crop losses and linger in the soil for years after an outbreak.
To help growers stay ahead of outbreaks, Virginia Tech researchers have developed a low-cost sensor that can detect the disease just days after infection, long before visible symptoms appear. The technology works by analyzing peanut plant sap for elevated levels of oxalic acid, a key indicator of infection. While traditional methods can take weeks or even months to reveal signs of disease, the new sensor can identify problems in as little as five days. Early detection allows farmers to treat affected plants sooner, reducing losses.
By combining agriculture, engineering, and data-driven decision-making, this work demonstrates how Virginia Tech research is creating practical solutions that support food processing and agribusiness.
