Springtime Activities in the NRV

New River Valley, VA – Spring is a season of renewal in Virginia’s New River Valley. Warmer days, blooming hillsides, and longer daylight hours invite residents and visitors alike to step outside and reconnect with the region’s landscapes, communities, and culture. From lively festivals and family-friendly events to scenic outdoor adventures, spring is the perfect time to explore everything the NRV has to offer. So, grab your calendar and your walking shoes and join us as we explore spring in the New River Valley.

 

1. Radford University Baseball & Softball

Enjoy the crack of a bat and a hot dog or two under blue skies at the Radford University baseball and softball games. These events add energy to the season, drawing fans out to take part in a rousing rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” while encouraging the home team to victory.

2. Easter Egg Drop at Thornspring Pastures

Pulaski County

Spring in Pulaski County kicks off with a fun, family-focused tradition at Thornspring  Pastures. The Easter Egg Drop offers a unique twist on a classic holiday celebration, set against the backdrop of rolling farmland as spring returns to the countryside. Families can enjoy the excitement of the event while soaking in the fresh air and open space that make farm visits especially appealing this time of year.

3. International Street Fair

Hosted by Virginia Tech, the International Street Fair is a spring tradition that brings the world to the heart of Blacksburg. The event begins with a Global Cultural Parade, followed by performances, music, and interactive presentations that celebrate cultures from around the globe. Visitors can explore booths hosted by international and cultural student organizations, enjoy traditional games and demonstrations, and purchase handmade crafts and authentic foods.

Spring is one of the best times to visit Mill Creek Falls, when seasonal rainfall brings the waterfalls to life. The hike to the falls winds through forested terrain that bursts with fresh greenery, making the journey just as rewarding as the destination. It’s a refreshing escape into nature and a reminder of why Giles County is known for its scenic outdoor experiences.

5. Wildwood Farms General Store

Floyd County

A visit to the Wildwood Farms General Store is a perfect way to round out a spring day in Floyd County. As the season brings new growth and color, the store offers a charming stop to explore local goods and enjoy the relaxed pace Floyd is known for. They offer a variety of different events from music to cruise-ins.

6. Wildwood Park

Wildwood Park comes alive with an abundance of wildflowers in the warmer months, drawing birds and over 70 different species of butterflies. Enjoy the park’s accessibility, restrooms, hiking trails, woodlands, butterfly gardens, interpretive nature programs, and an observation platform.  Connecting to the larger Bisset Park, the paved trail makes it a perfect spot for a relaxing walk or bicycle ride.

7. Pete Dye River Course

As spring greens the landscape, the award-winning Pete Dye River Course becomes a standout destination for golfers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Nestled along the New River, the course offers scenic views, challenging play, and a peaceful setting that feels especially inviting after winter fades.

8. Blacksburg Fork and Cork

Blacksburg Fork and Cork pairs the fresh energy of spring with great food, drink, and community. This popular event highlights regional flavors while bringing people together in a festive, outdoor atmosphere. Local restaurants, wineries, and breweries showcase their best offerings, making it a perfect excuse to sample something new while enjoying the season’s mild weather.

9. Giles County Motorcycle Ride

For those who prefer exploring the region on the open road, spring marks the return of motorcycle season in Giles County. The county’s designated touring routes wind through mountain roads, river valleys, and small towns, offering sweeping views and crisp spring air. It’s an ideal way to experience Virginia’s Mountain Playground as it wakes up for the season.

10. Horseback Riding at Along the Water

With blooming scenery and gentle weather, spring is an especially magical time to take in the Blue Ridge Mountains on horseback. Along the Water offers guided horseback rides through wooded trails, open meadows, and along the Little River, making it accessible for both beginners and experienced riders. Slow down and experience the NRV landscape from the saddle in this unique activity.

For history buffs there is The Civil War Weekend conference (cost associated) at Virginia Tech or you could pop over to Buffalo Mountain Brewery after a horseback ride to finish out your day in Floyd.
