Montgomery County, VA – Skyphos Technologies recently reported that they have been awarded their second U.S patent, contributing to their growing intellectual property portfolio in micro-scale 3D printing technologies for medical devices. Through “additive lithography”, a system that uses light and digital designs, they are working to create detailed parts for diagnostic tools with features as small as a human hair.
The press release stated that their newest patent “covers multi-wavelength polymerization, an emerging approach that Skyphos pioneered. By integrating and using multiple light frequencies, the company has dramatically expanded cure-depth control compared with traditional systems, enabling both fine microstructures and deep features in a single build.” A feature called “Dynamic Layering” lets the 3D printer adjust speed and precision during production, allowing it to make sections of the part quickly while maintaining detailed accuracy. This process allows the printer to create micro-scale parts in seconds, exceeding current manufacturing methods.
Based in Blacksburg, this startup manufactures parts for wearable health tech, tiny lab devices, and microneedle patches that can monitor your body or deliver medicine. Skyphos is currently working with several U.S. and international labs to develop their microneedle technology for drug delivery and skin-based diagnostics, with the goal of bringing these products to market soon.
