Montgomery County, VA – Virginia Tech recently reported that research is underway at their Kentland Experimental Aerial Systems (KEAS) Lab that is reshaping how weather data is collected. Aerospace engineers are developing autonomous drones capable of gathering atmospheric data at low altitudes for a more precise, hyperlocal weather forecasting system.
According to the article, the National Weather Service relies largely on weather balloons launched twice daily from about 100 sites nationwide. Drone systems being tested in the NRV could dramatically increase both the frequency and resolution of data collection, capturing hourly measurements and identifying microclimates like those found near the New River, where conditions can differ from other locations that are just minutes away.
The applications for this type of research are immediate. Agriculture, energy production, transportation, logistics, and construction all depend on accurate forecasts. Hyperlocal data can help farmers avoid costly losses and allow businesses to respond more strategically to weather-related disruptions.
With access to top rated research opportunities, Virginia’s New River Valley is built for those redefining the future. The work happening in the NRV is not theoretical. It is already shaping how industries operate and innovate. Explore how the NRV is A Natural Fit for uncrewed systems innovators here.
