NRV Poised to Benefit from Project VITAL
Montgomery County, VA – GO Virginia Region 2 recently reported that they have joined a multiregional initiative across the Commonwealth, Project VITAL: Virginia Innovations and Technology Advancements in Life Sciences, to make Virginia a biotechnology hub. According to the press release, Project VITAL is set to “establish new research cores, expand workforce development programs, and create a collaborative network connecting academic institutions with industry partners across the commonwealth’s biotechnology corridor.” As part of the GO Virginia Region 2 coverage area, Virginia’s New River Valley (NRV) is poised to significantly benefit from the $14.3 million investment to support Project VITAL.
Through the collaboration of the Roanoke Blacksburg Innovation Alliance (RBIA) , Virginia Tech, and Carilion Clinic in Project VITAL, the NRV will benefit from expanded research infrastructure, access to capital for biotech startups, and specialized programming to support new ventures. With a focus on talent recruitment, branding, and startup operations, the initiative will help drive economic growth in the region.
Project Vital is projected to create a total of 1,315 jobs over the next five years with an expected total economic impact of $40.8 million.
GO Virginia is a statewide initiative designed to encourage Virginia’s economic growth through the creation of high-wage jobs. Region 2 consists of the cities of Covington, Lynchburg, Radford, Roanoke, and Salem and the counties of Alleghany, Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, Botetourt, Campbell, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski, and Roanoke.
