Volvo Starts Sales of NRV-Made Electric Trucks

Pulaski County, VA – Volvo Trucks North America last week announced the sales start of electric trucks that will be made in Virginia’s New River Valley. Volvo’s New River Valley assembly plant, located in Dublin, will begin production of the Class 8 Volvo VNR Electric truck in early 2021. The new truck model is a zero-tailpipe emission, battery-electric vehicle.

According to Volvo, the “VNR Electric is designed for customer applications and driving cycles with local and regional distribution ranges, including food and beverage and pick-up and delivery routes. The 264-kWh lithium-ion batteries, which charge up to 80% within 70 minutes, have an operating range of up to 150 miles based on the truck’s configuration.”

Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America, said about the news,

“Volvo Trucks is making electromobility accessible, efficient and operationally viable. The future is here and we are proud to bring this new and very real solution to the North American commercial trucking industry.”

Wing and MAAP Partnership

Wing and MAAP Partnership Highlighted in Virginia Economic Review

Montgomery County, VA – The partnership between Wing and the Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership (MAAP) at Virginia Tech was highlighted in the Q3 2020 issue of the Virginia Economic Review. The article, titled “A Welcoming Atmosphere”, focuses on the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) research taking place in Virginia’s New River Valley and the “years of work that Wing and… MAAP have put into making drone delivery trials possible.”

In October 2019, Wing was able to successfully complete the first commercial drone delivery in the US. According to the article, Wing chose Christiansburg to be their first UAV delivery site in the US because,

“Christiansburg proved to be a good environment for drone tests because of both its proximity to MAAP and Virginia Tech and its “urban light” environment. The town offers some of the characteristics of urban areas without the challenges that more crowded cities present.”

Pulaski County Awarded SolSmart Gold Designation

Pulaski County Awarded SolSmart Gold Designation

Pulaski County, VA – Pulaski County was recently awarded a SolSmart Gold designation. SolSmart is a nationwide program that “recognizes cities, counties, and regional organizations for making it faster, easier, and more affordable to go solar.” SolSmart has only awarded 139 Gold designations across the country, and Pulaski County is one of only three communities in Virginia to achieve that designation.

According to County Administrator Jonathan Sweet, “this Gold designation further demonstrates that [Pulaski County has] made it easier and more affordable for citizens and business[es] to move to solar.”

Floyd County, VA – Floyd was voted the Top Tiny Adventure Town for 2020 by readers of Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine. The magazine “asked [their] readers to select the region’s best adventure hubs in [the] 10th annual Top Adventure Towns contest, which featured 100 towns across the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast competing for the title of best outdoor burg.”

TECHLAB Supplies NRV COVID-19 Task Force with Reagents to Expand Testing

Montgomery County, VA – TECHLAB® Inc., a leader in infectious disease diagnostics, announced on November 2, 2020 it has partnered with the New River Valley COVID-19 Task Force to cost-effectively expand future COVID-19 testing capacity. Under this agreement, the New River Health District secures access to TECHLAB’s analyte-specific reagents (ASRs) for SARS-CoV-2 for as little as $7-9 per use.

“As a company founded and headquartered here in the New River Valley, we are proud to work closely with public health officials to provide a cost-effective and flexible option to increase their COVID-19 testing,” said Joel Herbein, Ph.D., Vice President of Scientific Affairs at TECHLAB. “Our analyte-specific reagents can be used now to maximize COVID-19 testing by any lab that is CLIA-certified to perform medium- and high-complexity testing. We are also incorporating our ASRs into 96-well and rapid antigen tests and plan to submit to the U.S. FDA for emergency use authorization.”

“Testing continues to help us determine the prevalence of disease in our community, but the best protection is to remain vigilant,” said Noelle Bissell, M.D., director of the New River Health District. “Watch your distance, wear your mask, and wash your hands. That’s how you protect yourself and those around you.”

VEDP Highlights Phoenix Packaging’s Growth in NRV

Pulaski County, VA – A case study by the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) highlighted the growth of Phoenix Packaging’s U.S. operation in Virginia’s New River Valley over the past ten years. In 2010, the company established their North American headquarters in Pulaski County and expanded operations there in 2011, 2012, and 2017. The total investment in the region since 2010 by Grupo Phoenix, Phoenix Packaging’s parent company, has been “$106.2 million and 585 new jobs for the citizens of the New River Valley.”

VEDP’s case study describes the many business advantages that the NRV has to offer Phoenix Packaging. These include accessibility to major interstates and the talent pipeline coming from the region’s high-quality, local education institutions.

Alberto Peisach, the CEO of Grupo Phoenix, had this to say about locating in the region:

“Grupo Phoenix evaluated various location options to build upon its future in the United States and chose [Virginia’s New River Valley] due to a variety of factors, including a central location that allows us to be within 400 miles of 80 percent of the U.S. East Coast population; the ability to negotiate electricity at a competitive rate; access to rail transport, which reduces our logistics; a motivated labor force; support from the local colleges and universities to assist us with training specialized technical jobs; and the accessibility and unwavering support of the government to work together within the industry to create jobs.”
